Can I rent a cabin when I visit the park?

While there are many campgrounds throughout the park, there are not motels or cabin rentals inside the grounds other than the Le Conte Lodge. Located on the top of Mt. Le Conte, the lodge can only be reached by hiking. To reserve accommodations in the lodge, please call (865) 429-5704.

Where am I allowed to camp throughout the park?

There are 10 different campgrounds located throughout the Great Smoky Mountains Nation Park that are available for RVs and campers with their own tents. Many of the campgrounds also provide accommodations for larger groups.

There are also 5 different horse camps available for horse riders. Reservations for these spots must be made in advance.

For anyone backpacking through the Great Smokey Mountains, campsites are strategically placed throughout the entire park. There is a permit required in order to stay overnight in the park or in one of its different shelters. Advance reservations are required.

Is the weather nice in the park?

When you are planning a visit to the park, don’t forget that mountain elevations range from around 875 feet to 6,643 feet. Because of this, temperatures can differ from 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit from the bottom of the mountain to the top. Depending on the season, please remember to wear the appropriate clothing to allow for an enjoyable experience.

Are pets allowed in the park?

Leashed pets are allowed in designated picnic areas, campgrounds, road sides and parking areas throughout the park. There are only two specific trails that pets are allowed on; the Oconaluftee River Trail and the Gatlinburg Trail. All leashes cannot be longer than 6 feet.

Where is bike riding permitted in the park?

Biking is allowed on any road that is accessible by vehicle and is strictly prohibited on all park trails.

Where is fishing permitted in the park?

Visitors are allowed to fish during the entire year in most the park’s streams. To find out detailed information on park fishing rules, regulations and guidelines, go to the ranger station visitor center.

Can I rent horses inside the Great Smoky Mountains?

From the middle of March to the end of November, horseback riding is available by the hour.

Where are the park’s different picnic areas?

There are many different picnic areas located throughout the park at Twin Creeks, Cades Cove, Chimneys, Big Creek, Metcalf Bottoms, Heintooga, Greenbrier, Collins Creek, Deep Creek and Look Rock.

When can I use the services of a ranger-led program?

During the spring, summer and fall months, ranger-led programs are scheduled for your convenience. You can check the schedule of event listings regarding different programs and unique events like the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage, the Music of the Mountains, the Festival of Christmas Past and the Mountain Life Festival.

Am I able to host special events within the park?

Yes. All weddings and other events do require a permit and must follow the park’s specific rules and regulations. For permit information, call (828) 497-1930.
